Implicit in the Scientology worldview is a mandate to employ the truths of Scientology to uplift Mankind. Consequently, as Scientology grows, so too the humanitarian programs Scientologists support. Those programs now include:

The world’s largest nongovernmental anti-drug campaign, reaching tens of millions of at-risk youth each year;
The establishment of drug rehabilitation centers in more than 40 nations;
The world’s largest nongovernmental human rights public information campaign, broadly promoting the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
Global education programs bringing the gift of literacy to tens of millions of students in America, Europe, Asia and Africa;
A Way to Happiness movement spanning 135 nations, uplifting populations and restoring the brotherhood of Man.
The Scientology Volunteer Minister program bringing emergency relief to more than 10 million people at every major disaster site through the last twenty years.

Additionally, through the Citizens Commission on Human Rights Scientologists have further spotlighted and worked to outlaw the enforced drugging of schoolchildren, the psychiatric brutalities of electric shock and lobotomy, and biological warfare experiments.

Finally, the Church was among the original champions of the Freedom of Information Actand other access laws to protect the public interest and end government human rights abuses.

In conclusion, then, the Church of Scientology and Scientologists work in alignment with the Aims of Scientology and the dream of a “civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where Man is free to rise to greater heights.”

Where were you on September 11? Do you remember exactly where you heard the news?

I was on a bus.

I totally missed the import of the event. Someone was really upset and was talking about it. That was before I had a Blackberry, and the woman in question often exaggerated things so I fobbed it off as "she always overdoes it."

Then I found out what it was and --- shock. Utter shock.

I think the whole country blanked out for a day or so.

I thought the world would change because of it. I have to say I am largely disappointed.

My church (Scientology) has changed. We have become much more pro-active, much more involved in the community and much more active in outreach to others. A lot of my friends went to Haiti, for example. And some even went to Japan after the tsunami.

But when I look around in society, I am disappointed that what looked like it would prompt a resurgence in activism and social change stopped dead shortly afterwards.

What is the Church of Scientology?

Tim Bowles: Idealism in Action

As you read this page, untold millions on five continents are attempting to scratch out a subsistence living, many unsuccessfully, deprived of their basic human rights.

A trip to Africa in 2005 changed Tim Bowles’ life.

“When I arrived in Ghana, it was like coming home,” he says. “I knew I had to do something to help.”

Bowles, an attorney specializing in constitutional law, was in Africa to assist with the Youth for Human Rights International World Tour. Decades of gruesome civil wars have decimated wide regions of sub-Sahara Africa. Of the worst 20 countries in the 2004 Human Development Index, 19 are in Africa.

The wars dismantled the infrastructure, displaced entire villages, and destroyed livelihoods. The result: Widespread poverty and disease.

Bowles was so taken with the youth he met in Africa, and so moved by what they had been through, that he decided to take on the challenge personally.

Dedicated to making a real difference, Bowles returned to the continent the following year to launch a unique initiative. In coordination with a corps of young human rights activists he met there in 2005, each eager to bring about reform in his or her country, he developed the African Human Rights Leadership Campaign, under the banner of Youth for Human Rights. The Campaign has grown to provide young African men and women the training and experience they need to play key roles in creating and sustaining just and prosperous societies over the coming crucial decades.

In friendly competition with each other, teams of high school students generate and conduct public awareness campaigns on human rights abuses they select, based on the articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including human trafficking, access to justice and government corruption. They first learn leadership, organizational and communication skills—including public speaking and videography—to present their points of view effectively. In the course of conducting their campaigns through contact with media, a broad range of public and private sector leaders and the general public, the program enables students to become meaningful participants in their respective nation’s social, political and cultural advancement.

“The many remarkably bright young people with whom I have worked since 2005 are determined not to fall into the patterns of hatred to which many of their elders succumbed,” says Bowles.

Over the past six years, Bowles and his team of Youth for Human Rights program directors in Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone—and more recently Togo and Ethiopia—have trained nearly 700 youth in more than 150 schools, formed over 300 local human rights groups, and educated some 15,000 high school and junior high school students on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and their own responsibility in seeing that these rights are honored.

Bowles’ original decision to enter law followed a trip to India in 1973 where he first confronted the plight of the millions who live in poverty, deprived of human rights. He studied and practiced constitutional law to ensure the rights of others, including his church, were protected.

“I saw law as a helping profession,” says Bowles, “one that would provide knowledge and skills to help improve social conditions and advance worthy causes.”

The African Human Rights Leadership Campaign brings him full circle with this original purpose, as it is a means to improve the lives of millions. By empowering this and future generations with an understanding of their rights and responsibilities, the Campaign seeks to bring peace and prosperity in regions torn by hatred.

In the video From the Ruins: African Human Rights Leadership, Boersen Hinneh, Youth for Human Rights program director for Liberia, expresses the core concept of the program: “It’s about teaching young people about their basic human rights and responsibilities. And that is the key issue—responsibility. When young people have been exposed to so much violence I think there is a need that they learn their basic rights and responsibilities so that when they get older they will know how to treat their fellow citizens, their fellow man, equally.”

A Scientologist since 1975, Bowles says Scientology has enabled him to envision and pursue this purpose.

“I have gained the ability and willingness to confront and deal effectively with enormous challenges,” he says. “It has helped me conceive of doing seemingly impossible things and actually do them. Scientology, by its philosophical foundations, its tools, and the examples it sets through members’ actions, is an inspiration, a support and a means to my achieving my role in civilization’s advance.”

The meaning of the word "devastation" was brought home once again to Al Adriance. Although a disaster relief veteran who provided help after the 2007 Greensburg, Kansas, tornado, Adriance was stunned by the destruction he saw in Joplin, Missouri, in May 2011.

Al Adriance will long remember Memorial Day Weekend 2011, not for the celebrations and parties, but for what he confronted in Joplin, Missouri, after the May 23 tornado.
Learning of the disaster, the Kansas Citian left for Joplin the following morning and spent the next 10 days providing relief.
Adriance coordinated the work of a team of some 40 Scientology Volunteer Ministers who converged in Joplin from the Church of Scientology St. Louis and the Church of Scientology Kansas City, Missouri.
"Search and rescue was a monumental task because of the magnitude of the disaster," says Adriance. "So much of the city was destroyed—roofs torn off, cars overturned, entire city blocks leveled. All that was left of one house we saw was a stairwell and a closet. "
They set up their big yellow Volunteer Ministers tent and began providing Scientology assists—procedures developed by L. Ron Hubbard that address the spiritual and emotional effects of trauma, to help people recover from the stress and injury.
"Everyone was under pressure and physical strain. Search and rescue and cleanup activities are physically exhausting and can be extremely draining emotionally," he says. "We delivered Scientology assists to hundreds of people who came through the tent in a steady stream—residents, other volunteers, administrators, caregivers, police and fire fighters. People felt so much better after their assists that the word of mouth spread fast—we were always busy."

ANTI-DRUG A DRUG EDUCATION AND PREVENTION CAMPAIGN ON A GLOBAL SCALE

Every 12 seconds another school-age child experiments with illicit drugs for the first time—a grim reminder of just how pervasive drug abuse is among young people.

To combat this epidemic, the Church of Scientology sponsors the largest nongovernmental anti-drug information and prevention campaign on Earth. It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately. By statistical survey, the Drug-Free World Campaign has thus far prevented some 500,000 young people from recreational drug use…or worse.

There is still, however, much more to be done. Thus, the Church of Scientology offers its publications (which neither contain nor advocate any Scientology beliefs) to like-minded anti-drug coalitions, government institutions, civic groups and schools. These materials include The Truth About Drugs series of 13 educational booklets—covering the major “drugs of choice” and presented in a straightforward manner to educate young people on their actual effects.

There is also a study guide, activities manual and an educator’s classroom kit. These provide teachers, law enforcement and community groups with effective tools to educate youth and enable them to make correct decisions about drugs.

Finally, there is the newly released 90-minute documentary to accompany and complement The Truth About Drugs series of booklets. Each film chapter offers an in-depth look at an individual drug, as told by those who survived addiction.

In all, the Drug-Free World Campaign represents an enormous stride toward raising a generation who will remain free from the ravages of drug abuse.

SUPERBIKE LEGEND KEITH CODE, FREEDOM AT 160 MPH

A name synonymous with success and speed, racing instructor and Superbike School founder Keith Code takes pride in the champions he’s trained and the lives he’s saved from drug abuse and addiction. Having trained more than 150,000 motorbike riders over the last 35 years, racing instructor Keith Code has virtually defined “skill” in motorbike racing. His video on Scientology.org captures the speed and excitement of his work.

Code has authored numerous books on motorbike racing, and his Superbike Schools, now operating in 13 countries, have helped more than 50 students become national and world champions.

Racing bikes since he was 16, there was a point Code nearly gave up the sport—and everything else for that matter.

“It was the 1960s. I abused drugs for six years. By 1968, that landed me in the hospital. It was time for a change,” says Code.

He knew it was either drugs or his dream—and, likely, his life. It was one thing to make the decision and another thing to make it stick. He didn’t expect it to be easy to pull it off.

“A friend of mine was into Scientology,” he says. “I could see he was getting things together. I certainly needed help and thought maybe this could do the trick.”

Code took the Scientology Communication Course.

“It was probably the first time I had been aware of my surroundings in about five years,” he says. “The course opened up a crack in an otherwise-closed door to my aspirations and dreams.”

Continuing his studies and Scientology spiritual counseling, his dreams kept coming true. Personally, professionally, in every aspect of his life—Scientology helped him attain a level of energy, vitality and awareness far beyond the chemical “high” he had sought from drugs.

Code got back into racing and winning again.

Then, while taking a course at his Church in the technology of study, he came upon something that gave his life new direction. L. Ron Hubbard had isolated the barriers to learning any subject. Code could use this technology to help people understand the basics of motorcycle riding. Hubbard had also broken down the subject of study into simple parts. Why not do the same for the subject Code knew best?

In 1976, Code began training motorbike riders with new motorbike riding and racing techniques he had developed. It worked. He retired from superbike racing in 1979 to devote himself to this new career.

Having nearly lost everything through his own abuse of heroin and other drugs in the 1960s before finding Scientology, Code has championed another field as well. Active for more than 40 years in drug prevention and education, he is a role model to those he meets and trains on a personal basis, and as the spokesperson for Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a drug education and prevention initiative supported by the Church of Scientology and a host of other groups and organizations internationally.

At the top of a field he adores, and married to his soul mate, Judy, for the last 40 years, the Glendale, California-based motorbike mentor lives the life of his dreams. THE HEALING TOUCH OF BYRON YAN

The grin on Byron Yan’s face in his “Meet a Scientologist” video on www.Scientology.orgmakes it hard to believe he used to feel depressed. But happiness was a struggle—until he found Scientology.

Despite a highly rewarding career as a Shiatsu practitioner—a traditional hands-on therapy that originated in Japan—Yan was not a happy man. He entered the field to help others, but the help he really needed eluded him.

Yan’s first inkling that Scientology could offer a solution was the change he saw in a friend—a colleague who seemed more stable and calm after he enrolled on a course at the Church of Scientology of Johannesburg, South Africa.

“I got the idea I may have found something I could use as well,” Yan says.

He then learned that another fellow South African was training as a Dianetics auditor—a spiritual counselor, from Latin audire, “to hear or listen.” This friend offered him a Dianetics session, and Yan agreed.

“He helped me with the most upsetting incident in my life—the death of a family member,” says the 29-year-old. ”It was really hard to confront, but he got me through it and that session changed my life. Before, I couldn’t think about the incident without enormous grief. Through Dianetics I gained relief.”

The results of this auditing have impacted his entire life.

“Things are much easier,” he says. “I don’t have the baggage and upsets I used to have. Life just flows. Scientology has certainly changed my life.”

Volunteer Ministers have been involved in disaster relief efforts all over the world. This includes a corps hundreds strong at Ground Zero within hours of the 9/11 tragedy, more than 500 volunteers from 11 nations in Southeast Asia in the wake of the tsunami, over 900 Volunteer Ministers attending to victims in Louisiana and Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Rita and in the Haiti earthquake disaster, the Church of Scientology and its parishioners flew in plane loads of much-needed medical and food supplies. In addition they brought in hundreds of medical professionals and Scientology Volunteer Ministers to help Haitians cope with their losses and rebuild their lives.

Volunteer Ministers have also trained and partnered with over 500 different groups, organizations and agencies around the world including the Red Cross, FEMA, National Guard, Army Cadets, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, Rotary Clubs, civil defense and disaster management agencies, YMCAs, police and fire departments of dozens of cities and towns and hundreds more national and regional groups and organizations.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Acknowledged for their Help After Mumbai Terror Attack

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers were featured in a recent edition of India’s UpperCrust Magazine for their work in the wake of last year’s Mumbai terror attacks. The article acknowledges the importance of their contribution, not only in helping victims of the attack but in training emergency response personnel and health care specialists to cope effectively with any future terrorism or disasters.

The article tells how the Scientology team worked with the staff at Sir JJ Hospital to help the victims of the terrorism. Once the majority of those admitted had been discharged from the hospital, the Scientologists, consisting of members of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers India Goodwill Tour and local volunteers whom they have trained, worked with colleges and Mumbai University to train students and faculty in Scientology techniques that increase effectiveness in the face of disaster. Among those they trained were the trainers of the Maharashtra Civil Defense team.

The article featured an interview with Marion Whitta, the leader of the Scientology Volunteers. Asked why Scientology is so popular in India, Marion stated, “It’s simply a case of workability. People in India are interested in personality improvement and are seeking solutions for the work-a-day world, whether how to do better at work or how to be a great mother or how to be able to graduate as a student…who knows and can effectively apply what he or she has learned.” She went on to say that “people want solutions to their problems or they just want to improve their condition in life and when they find technology that is simple, something they can apply for themselves, then they want exactly that.”

Pointing out that this is not the first time Scientology has been acknowledged for its work in India, the article states: “As to the founder of this movement, Mr. L. Ron Hubbard, here is a man already known to many Indians as he was awarded, in March 2006 in Delhi, with the prestigious Shristi award (the first time this national award has been bestowed on a man not of Indian heritage),” and that he was again honored last August by the Indian Lions Club in Delhi with the posthumous presentation of their Humanitarian Award.

The article points out that the India Scientology tour has been traveling throughout the country since its arrival in 2005. “Training seminars have been delivered to literally thousands of professionals as well as students” and to “hundreds of police officers in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Mysore,” including BSF (the Border Security Force) and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) officers.

But the article also notes that the Scientology Volunteer Ministers provide help and training to anyone, as the article states, including “the ‘man in the street’ who just wants to be able to get along better in some aspect of his life.”

Message to Psychiatrists - Proving Your Stupidity is not Required

This man is supposed to have studied and been trained as a fully qualified medical doctor.

He pretends to know more than all but about 100,000 people on earth about people and how they work.

He probably even paid thousands for this "education."

He probably even gets paid thousands for doing studies, publishing papers.

He might even tell people they should take mind altering drugs that cause suicide to get over their depression (a favorite past time of psychiatrists around the world).

So, you might think he would have some brilliant advice for you about how to get along better with your fellow man (talk to them, learn more about their lives).

Maybe some ideas about how to work out your differences with other members of the family (maybe use a mediator, maybe set some ground rules about subjects you agree not to talk about over the holidays - like religion and war - because you will never agree on those subjects, while instead you concentrate on some of the things you do agree with - quality education for your children, real playgrounds and music lessons in school - who knows?).

But, count on a psychiatrist to disappoint and disillusion you.

Here's the brilliant suggestion from a "U.S. expert" that UPI decided was worth sending out a wire on (my mom is a better expert than this, and probably your brother is as well).

Here are the sages words:

"In terms of relationships, nothing magical 'just happens' during the holidays," said Dr. Waguih William IsHak, medical director of the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Service at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

"If you don't get along with your in-laws during the year, you're probably not going to get along with them during the holiday season either," said IsHak. "Understanding that before you go to visit them can make a big difference in how you'll handle your feelings while you're there."

The most important point of a study on dangerous and harmful psychiatric drugs is being brushed off by those who refuse to tell parents what the drugs really do. But truth will out.

A study published on Dec 18, says that children stop taking ADHD drugs becuase they feel "lifeless."

The solution being proposed is "more education about the drugs."

The real solution, which more and more parents, teachers, doctors are demanding is a COMPLETE MORATORIUM on these drugs, until responsible, long term, post marketing studies are done on people who took these drugs as children.

Studies on cancer, impotence, and other long term results must be conducted.

Making money is not a reason to damage innocent children's lives.

When the Religion Newswriters Association (RNA) invited Scientology spokesperson Bob Adams to speak on the panel at their annual conference in Salt Lake City, they made no claim to understanding the Scientology religion — what Scientologists believe or why. Adams, Vice President of the Church of Scientology International, made it really simple when he let them know that the keynote of the Scientology religion is "help."

Speaking at the annual conference of the RNA in Salt Lake City, Bob brought the religion into focus for the attendees when he said:

"The Scientology religion was born a half century ago into a world on the brink of atomic war.

"Man had become obsessed with science to the point he had lost his spirituality and his social sciences had not kept pace with his material gains."

Adams reminded those in attendance that at this point, mankind was faced, for the first time, with the possibility of total annihilation through atomic war. He went on to say:

"Into that world came first Dianetics in 1950, then Scientology in 1954.

"We use the writings of L. Ron Hubbard in the tradition of what he described as the foremost right of any Church - or for that matter the foremost human right and I quote:

"The biggest right there is, is not the right to vote, is not the right to freedom of speech, or press, or religion or anything else.

"The biggest right there is in human rights is the right to help!"

Bob described the various social benefit programs the church sponsors, explaining that the reason they are so effective is that they use the discoveries of Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard.

Then he took up the issue of the church's expansion, saying: "If you've heard the phrase 'fastest growing religious movement on earth,' it's because in just over 50 years, there now stand more than six thousand groups, missions and churches of Scientology across 159 nations, with a current membership of 10 million people."

And bringing this all into perspective, pointing out that all the programs, whether aimed at providing one-on-one help for the individual or helping to eradicate the most serious social ills that plague our society at this time, all are aligned to accomplishing the Aims of Scientology: "A civilization without insanity, without criminals, and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights and where man is free to rise to greater heights.

The May edition of Freedom features a cover story (“The Child Protection Racket”) on how psychiatrists have infiltrated child protective services agencies to the detriment of families.

In particular, in a story that won an Award of Excellence from the Religion Communicators Council entitled “The Dark Mystery of the Duplessis Orphans,” Freedom reveals how tens of thousands of disadvantaged children were transferred from orphanages into asylums in a corrupt ploy to divert funding into psychiatric coffers. This is a mystery going back 50 year which has been uncovered for the first time in this issue of Freedom.

The latest edition of Freedom Magazine, published by the Church of Scientology International, includes the story of Steve Carlson, a 34-year-old Scientologist and entrepreneur who was a key organizer of relief and rebuilding efforts in Banda Aceh and other battered areas of Sumatra following the tsunami that hit that island in December 2004.
The story starts with describing how Steve decided to make this commitment: “A 34-year-old businessman who normally divides his time between offices in Florida and California, Carlson was moved by the enormity of the tsunami tragedy and resolved to do something to help the survivors he saw on the news.”

Freedom tells how, “From a command post in the North Sumatran capital of Medan,” he and the other members of the International Scientology Disaster Relief Team “organized transport, housing and care for victims flooding into the city from outlying disaster sites. ‘We set up our headquarters in a Medan hotel to bring vitally needed organization and relief to the hospitals, which had thousands of people pouring in. The need was so great that we ended up helping to set up several new refugee centers and hospitals in Medan and in Banda Aceh.’”
Freedom goes on to describe the assistance Carlson and his team provided on the island of Nias. After the earthquake on this predominantly Christian island, lying off the west coast of Sumatra — parts of which had been utterly destroyed — the Muslim-oriented North Sumatran government asked Steve and his team of volunteers to “go to the island to assay the damage and make a determination on the extent of aid needed for the survivors.”

The article then covers Carlson’s work in coordinating the teams traveling to decimated Banda Aceh, the way the team “quickly set up aid stations in each location to ensure the needy got vital supplies and immediate attention,“ and includes that the work of the International Scientology Disaster Relief Team was spotlighted in the December 2005 issue of National Geographic.

France is one of the most influential countries in the EU. And although it is a cultural center with a very rich history, it has not got a good record on human rights or religious tolerance.

Two hundred years ago, in a fierce reaction against centuries of repression and bad administration, where power and wealth was concentrated in the few and the "common man" had no opportunity for advancement, the revolutionary government "secularized" France. Whereas prior to this there was an official state religion and all had to abide by it, and France waged a civil war against those who held different beliefs, their solution was to outlaw belief and faith.

And in that same tradition, today they outlaw any outward manifestation of faith.

Imagine, an orthodox Jewish man may not teach school in France unless he is willing to abandon an essential part of his faith, the wearing of a yarmulke.

"The awards ceremony was a highlight of the RCC’s annual convention, which concluded last weekend in Dallas-Fort Worth. The RCC, an international interfaith association of religion communications and public relations professionals, recognized Freedom’s online report as “an important and moving investigative piece reporting on the inhumane treatment of orphans in Quebec.”

France is coming more and more under scrutiny as to the effect of its policies of religious intolerance and their effect on racial, ethnic and religious tension.

Modern war is terrorism and retaliation against terrorism.

If countries like France were to revise their official xenophobia upward toward human rights and tolerance maybe we could do something to end this social disease.

I am very suspect of the integrity of most magazines' investigative reporting because they are being paid a lot of money by companies who have far too many skeletons in their closets. To wit the pharmaceutical companies that pay for all the "bi-polar" adds in US News and World Report. Do you really expect this magazine to ever to a truthful expose of the way drug trials are fudged and how patients with negative reactions are discontinued from the trials and so not included in the findings?

From time to time Freedom Magazine does features on Scientology events. As covered in the book What is Scientology ceremonies celebrated by Scientologists, while Scientologists celebrate many of the same holidays that those in their countries observe, there are several which are unique to the Scientology religion.

Also, a tradition which began over 20 years ago is to have an event with well known Scientologists as speakers and to record these and show them in every church and mission in the world.

These events are translated or subtitled in amazingly short order and are shipped out so the event can be held within one or at the most two weeks of having taken place.

And these events are quite sophisticated multi-media presentations including video clips of news from Scientology churches.

They are elegant presentations, well worth attending even if you are not a Scientologist.

David Miscavige is often the emcee of these events and usually gives the keynote speech as well. Mr. Miscavige is Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center.

Freedom Magazine has covered a number of these events. For example there is a Freedom Magazine article on an event where David Miscavige was master of ceremonies in Clearwater, Florida a few years ago, commemorating the anniversary of the birth of L. Ron Hubbard.

At the Southern California Media Professionals 2006 Award Luncheon, Tom Whittle, the magazine's editor was the keynote speaker and was presented the 1st prize for this story.

For 7 years Freedom Magazine has been working with victims and their families to document this story, which begins: "In the mid-20th century, under the regime of Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessis, tens of thousands of disadvantaged children were transferred from orphanages into asylums in a corrupt ploy to divert funding into psychiatric coffers.
